Lamar University is a comprehensive university in Beaumont, which is the county seat of Jefferson County, situated in the US state of Texas, a city with a population estimated at a number of more than 113 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. The city was named by Henry Millard for Jefferson Beaumont, who came to Texas in 1835, and along with his business partners, purchased land between the settlements of Tevis Bluff and Santa Anna, where they founded the city of Beaumont.
Lamar University's history began in September, 1923, when it first started as South Park Junior College, the first college in Texas to receive Texas Department of Education approval during the first year of operation. In 1975, the institution merged with Port Arthur College in Port Arthur, Texas, thus, Lamar University-Port Arthur being created. In 1990 Lamar Institute of Technology was created, in order to provide technical, business, health and industrial education through programs two years or fewer in length, 5 years later the Lamar University System being incorporated into the Texas State University System, Lamar State College - Orange, Lamar State College - Port Arthur and Lamar Institute of Technology becoming separate entities.
today, Lamar University has a total enrollment of more than 14 000 students, the highest enrollment in the university’s 87-year history, offering numerous educational programs in various fields of study, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, in areas such as biology, art, science communication, history, mathematics and many other.
The university's athletic teams are known as the Lamar Cardinals, who compete in NCAA Division I, in the Southland Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including basketball, tennis, soccer, baseball and volleyball. Their signature colors are red and white.
